Middle
Management:
A Dying Breed ?
|
|
In
a nutshell, yes.
|
|
Where
is the middle anyway ? We’ve all got a job
of work to do whether we’re the Financial
Director or the Warehouse Foreman. Whatever
the level we work at, we don’t really need
to employ people to act as “filters” from
one level to another.
|
|
Thankfully,
the smaller companies I have worked with never
seemed to have fallen for the middle
management structure in quite the same way as
bigger companies once did – the consequences
in employment costs are that much more
obvious.
|
|
I
think we should all stop talking about middle
managers or, if we do, talk about them in the
same way as we might discuss those funny chaps
who used to have to walk in front of a
motorcar with a flag to warn people of the
car’s approach.
|
|
Very
quaint but not relevant to today.
|
|
The
key really is for everyone to understand their
role within the company and, of course, to
feel comfortable in that role. Again, that
calls for clear job descriptions, relevant
training and a feeling of empowerment
at
every level.
|
|
That
way, we can stop referring to that old, old
chestnut of a joke that if you’re in the
middle of the road, you tend to get run over.
